Resources on Prayer | Brian Chesemore

February 3, 2017 by: Brian Chesemore

Last week I had the privilege of revisiting some great books on prayer as I prepared for my message on Luke 11.1-13. Reading on this topic is a joyful reminder of the unspeakable privilege we have as the redeemed to call God, “Father.” For me, reading on ... Keep Reading

Holy Week Resources

March 23, 2016 by: Jeff Purswell

In the busy-ness of everyday life, it's easy to let Easter sneak up on us without much thought, preparation, or meditation. Despite its centrality, we can sometimes treat it as an after thought or just another Sunday. But whether we recognize it or not and whether we prepare for it or not, the fact remains that the events we remember during the Easter season are of pre-eminent importance for the Christian (I Corinthians 15:3). As we meditate and celebrate this week, we join a community of saints around the world and throughout the ages who have been saved and radically transformed by the death and resurrection of Jesus. ... Over the past several weeks, CJ has led our church to look to our God and Savior in our grief. A few weeks ago, in his message from Habakkuk, he specifically explored how we, as christians, should respond when life doesn't make sense. Suffering is a reality in our fal... Keep Reading

Eight Great Books About the Gospel

August 13, 2014 by: C.J. Mahaney

“The gospel cannot be preached and heard enough, for it cannot be grasped well enough,” wrote Martin Luther.* By God’s grace I have been a Christian for 42 years. I agree with Luther, "I still cannot hear the gospel enough. Each morning I seek to preach the gospel to myself by my study of Scripture and through the strategic reading of supplemental books about the cross. Here’s why: I awaken each day with a tendency to forget that which is most important: the gospel. Because I am prone to forget, I must create practices that will enable me to remember what I must not forget: the cross. So each day I seek to spend time in a location where I am not distracted, unhurriedly reading and meditating on Scripture and finding my way in Scripture to a hill called Calvary. I want to meditate each day on Christ and him crucified. Each day I need to remind myself of the gospel. I cannot live on yesterday’s recollection of the gospel. I need to review and rehearse the gospel each day or I will assume the gospel, forget the gospel, and prove vulnerable to all manner of temptation and sin. So here are some of the books I have read and re-read as a supplement to Scripture (providing insight into Scripture) that have been a means of grace to my soul. As I read these books I am reminded of the gospel, I experience fresh affection for the Savior, and am freshly amazed by grace.... Keep Reading

Resources for Studying Mark

June 27, 2014 by: C.J. Mahaney

What a joy it has been thus far to preach and worship our way through the Gospel of Mark on Sunday mornings. I have been deeply affected by each glimpse of and encounter with the Savior we have experienced through this Gospel. I don't want this series to end and I am proceeding as slowly as possible! As we’re nearing the midpoint of our sermon series, perhaps you’d like to do some deeper study on this gospel. Thankfully for us, there are many wonderful resources available to guide our study. The following are three of my favorites.... Keep Reading

Excellence, by Andreas Köstenberger

June 20, 2014 by: Brian Chesemore

As I mentioned on Sunday, last week the pastors set aside the day to pray, study, and consider ways we might serve the church more effectively in the months to come. What a joy it was to begin our day with an extended time of prayer, giving thanks for each of you. We also took time to discuss various chapters assigned to us from a book entitled Excellence by Andreas Köstenberger. Because “God is the grounds of all true excellence,” the book takes the reader along a God-centered pursuit of excellence that spans our vocational callings, our moral character, and our relationships....
